the hands
the first cut was about texture.
the gap was an answer. absence as material. space as decision.
not a stone, not a setting. just the surface - where light would land, where shadow would stay. i wanted a piece that held its surroundings. shade and light. movement. something that couldn’t be read completely from a distance. the uncertainty was the point.
the gap came from a question i kept returning to. what else can fit in a ring. not what else can sit on top of it, or hang from it - but what can exist inside the form itself.

a gap is where the surface lets an opportunity slip.
in portuguese, fenda means exactly that. a gap. a cut. the trace a blade leaves in a surface. the fenda a skirt reveals only when you walk.
i didn’t know i was naming anything yet. the studio came later. the word came later. at the bench, alone with the wax, there was only the question and the form it found.
that ring is still made. the piece in this video is that ring - the same gap, the same question, the same hand learning how to hold it.
everything fenda has made since begins here.
the hand decides before the form does.
